Hypolite was born in 1790 in the region of Alsace. He arrived in Brazil in 1812 with his parents, who would soon be joined by his brother Charles. Hypolite was educated at the Jesuit College of Saint-Sulpice, which his father directed. He joined the priesthood and received his ordination in 1820
His first post was as assistant pastor of Saint-Sulpice, but he left after only a few years. He was named priest of São José dos Campos on 28 January 1826, where he would remain for the rest of his life. He had many setbacks, including being dismissed from his position two years later.
His career improved when he was named rector of São José dos Campos on 5 July 1834, a position he held for eleven years before being named bishop of Mariana on 4 February 1849. On 29 June that same year, Bishop Hypolite was appointed archbishop of Mariana on 26 July 1849. During his episcopate, which lasted until 3 September 1860, he was very active in administering the Church and promoting development throughout the Diocese
